These programs are designed for individuals seeking meaningful, long-term training support—not quick fixes or isolated obedience skills. Whether your goal is a well-mannered family dog or foundational preparation for service or therapy work, our programs emphasize safety, emotional regulation, and real-world reliability.

Public training programs also serve a larger purpose: they directly support our mission to ethically develop and place service and therapy dogs for individuals with psychiatric, autistic, and mobility-related needs.

Heel’n offers in-home training support for puppies, older dogs, and dogs with specific behavioral needs.

About Us

Heel’n Behavior & Service Dogs is led by a degree-certified animal behaviorist with over 25 years of experience in training, behavior, and real-world handling.

Our trainers are certified, experienced dog trainers & Fear Free–certified, ensuring dogs are handled with care, awareness, and respect at every stage of training.

Our work is relationship-focused and grounded in behavioral science, with an emphasis on emotional regulation, calm decision-making, and safety. We specialize in helping dogs learn how to navigate everyday life with clarity and stability, rather than relying on force, suppression, or performance-based obedience.

While we offer professional training to the public, every program supports a larger mission: funding the ethical development and placement of service and therapy dogs for individuals with psychiatric, autistic, and mobility-related needs.

Addressing Problematic Behaviors

Heel’n’s programs are designed to address and resolve problematic behaviors, not simply manage them.

This includes challenges such as:

Behavioral change begins with understanding why a behavior is occurring. By addressing emotional regulation, communication, environment, and learning history, we work to replace unwanted behaviors with calm, appropriate alternatives.

Your Dog’s Health, Safety & Well-Being

Your dog’s well-being is central to everything we do. Training at Heel’n is designed to feel safe, structured, and supportive — for both dogs and their people.

Dogs in our programs are cared for by a team led by a degree-certified behaviorist who lives on site, with hands-on experience that includes veterinary technician work and fear-free handling principles. Our assistants are Fear Free–certified, ensuring dogs are handled with care, awareness, and respect at every stage of training.

For comfort and safety:

Dogs stay in individual rooms, not crates
Training is conducted one-on-one to ensure focus, safety, and clarity
Play is limited to small, carefully selected groups of no more than three dogs
All outdoor areas are fully fenced and secure

We encourage owners to send familiar items from home — a favorite bed, toys, nighttime comforts, or a personal item with your scent, such as a sweater. These familiar touches help dogs feel secure, grounded, and connected while they settle into training.

Maintaining elements of home supports emotional well-being and allows dogs to learn more comfortably and confidently in a new environment.

Dogs are supported throughout the day with structured routines that typically include:

Two daily walks

Purposeful playtime

Training sessions focused on manners, behavior, and real-life skills

Household behavior practice

Grooming and veterinary handling skills

Calm, pre-bed settling and cuddle-based training

Our days are intentionally full — working with dogs from approximately 7am to 11pm — because learning does not only happen during formal training sessions. It happens through routines, transitions, rest, and relationship.

We care for every dog as if they were our own, and we understand the trust it takes to place your dog in someone else’s care.

Goal-Based Training Programs

At Heel’n, our training programs are structured around clear, practical goals rather than one-size-fits-all timelines. Each program is designed to support calm behavior, emotional regulation, and real-world safety, while meeting dogs and owners where they are.

Puppy Program

Our Puppy Program is designed for young puppies and their families, with education beginning as early as eight weeks of age.

This program focuses on early learning during critical developmental periods and includes:

Foundational behavior and communication skills
Emotional regulation and confidence-building
Household manners and daily routines
Early exposure and thoughtful social development

The Puppy Foundations Program includes three in-home sessions, allowing guidance and support to take place directly within the puppy’s living environment. These sessions help owners establish healthy habits early and address questions as they arise during this important stage of development.

The Complete Education Program

The Complete Education Program provides dogs with a full, real-life education rooted in calm, focused decision-making.

Four-Week Complete Education

Designed for dogs who will regularly accompany their owners into pet-friendly public environments, such as stores and shared community spaces.

In addition to household foundations, this option includes:

Expanded exposure to public environments
Practice around higher levels of distraction
Reinforcement of calm behavior and neutrality outside the home

Both options follow the same educational philosophy, with the length determined by the environments the dog is expected to navigate.

Choosing the Right Program

Both options follow a Monday–Friday training schedule, with weekends spent at home, allowing dogs and owners to practice skills in their own environment and support real-life generalization.

Each Complete Education Program also includes:

One in-home session to support household application
Three to four on-site owner sessions for hands-on learning and skill transfer
A weekly video series covering canine communication, behavior, and emotional regulation
Our Training & Communication book
All training materials needed throughout the program
Daily updates on your dog’s progress

Program recommendations are discussed during the 15-minute introductory call with our degree-certified behaviorist. This conversation allows us to understand your goals, your dog’s age and history, and determine the most appropriate starting point.

Program structure and rates are reviewed during this call to ensure clarity and alignment before moving forward.

The Final Evaluation

Every dog completing a Heel’n training program participates in a final evaluation designed to assess real-world readiness, safety, and emotional stability.

This evaluation is not a performance test or a title-based exercise. Instead, it functions as a practical measure of education, similar in scope to a Canine Good Citizen–style assessment, but aligned with the expectations of everyday living and service-level reliability.

The evaluation focuses on a dog’s ability to:

Remain calm and focused in familiar and unfamiliar environments
Respond appropriately to everyday distractions
Demonstrate safe, thoughtful behavior around people, dogs, and movement
Navigate transitions between activity and rest without escalation
Maintain manners and emotional regulation under mild pressure

For dogs on a service-oriented track, the evaluation also helps determine whether the dog demonstrates the emotional resilience and stability required for continued service training or placement consideration.

The purpose of this evaluation is not to pass or fail dogs harshly, but to ensure that learning is solid, transferable, and safe. It also provides owners with clarity about where their dog excels and what areas may need continued support.

Completion of the program reflects a dog who has received a complete education, grounded in calm decision-making, safety, and real-world reliability.
