The Full Story
About Us
Heel’n Behavior & Service Dogs was created to meet a growing need for calm, reliable service and therapy dogs trained with intention, ethics, and long-term success in mind.
Our work is grounded in the belief that dogs thrive when training focuses on emotional regulation, thoughtful decision-making, and strong relationships — not force, fear, or performance-driven methods. Whether a dog is supporting an individual as a service partner or learning how to navigate daily life as a family companion, stability and trust come first.

Led by a Degree-Certified Behaviorist
Heel’n Behavior & Service Dogs is led by a degree-certified animal behaviorist with over 25 years of experience working with dogs and horses in training, behavior, and real-world handling environments.
This work is grounded in formal behavioral education combined with decades of hands-on application. The focus is on understanding how dogs think, respond, and regulate themselves — particularly in situations involving stress, responsibility, and close human partnership, such as service and therapy work.
Over the years, this experience has shaped a training philosophy that prioritizes calm behavior, emotional stability, and thoughtful decision-making over force, performance, or quick results.

Our Philosophy
At Heel’n, our philosophy is centered on developing calm, emotionally stable, and reliable dogs who are capable of supporting people through real life — not just performing trained behaviors.
We believe that true reliability comes from emotional regulation, thoughtful decision-making, and trust built over time. For this reason, we do not rush development or rely on force, suppression, or high-arousal methods. Instead, we focus on creating dogs who can remain steady, present, and responsive even in moments of stress or uncertainty.
Our work is guided by the understanding that service and therapy dogs must be more than task-trained. They must be able to:
-
Navigate complex environments calmly
-
Respond appropriately to human emotion
-
Adapt to change without becoming overwhelmed
-
Provide consistent support over the course of a lifetime
To support this philosophy, we work with dogs who are selected intentionally — whether through carefully evaluated breed-specific rescue candidates or ethically bred, purpose-bred puppies raised with service and therapy work in mind. Selection, environment, and education all matter.
Every aspect of Heel’n — from the training methods we use, to the environments dogs live in, to the pace of development — reflects a commitment to ethical training, thoughtful placement, and long-term success for both dogs and the people they support.

Our Retreat-Style Facility
At Heel’n Behavior & Service Dogs, our training takes place in a true retreat setting designed for both comfort and real-world learning. Nestled on a beautiful two-acre training space within a larger 40-acre farm, our facility allows us to carefully control your dog’s exposure to new experiences—supporting focus, confidence, and emotional balance while preventing overstimulation. With daily enrichment and training sessions running from 7AM to 11PM, dogs benefit from a balanced routine of learning, play, and rest.
Dogs sleep in our Zen Den, just a few feet from our own home, each with their own private room. We encourage owners to bring their dog’s bed, favorite toys, bones, and an item with their scent—so every dog feels comforted and close to their family, even while away. Our goal is to create a calming, restful space where dogs can truly recharge between training sessions, surrounded by familiar comforts and soothing touches.
This is why we refer to our approach as retreat training: dogs learn, live, rest, and train in an environment that supports both growth and nervous system balance.

Training Spaces
The Training Room

Our primary indoor training space is intentionally designed to feel home-like rather than gym-like. This allows dogs to practice behaviors that matter inside a household environment.
The training room is used to focus on:
-
Settling and calm indoor behavior
-
Furniture manners and appropriate boundaries
-
Quiet presence in shared living spaces
Everyday movement and transitions within a home
The Yard

The outdoor training yard provides a real-life setting where dogs can practice focus and neutrality around natural distractions.
Situated on a pondside two-acre space, the yard allows dogs to experience:
-
Open space and movement
-
Environmental sounds and activity
-
Wildlife and changing surroundings
This environment supports emotional balance and thoughtful decision-making without overstimulation
The Porch

The porch reflects the indoor–outdoor lifestyle common to Charleston homes. This space is used to teach everyday manners that arise during meals, gatherings, and shared outdoor living.
Training in this area focuses on:
-
Mealtime manners and appropriate behavior around food
-
Calm behavior around patio furniture and shared seating
-
Appropriate play habits and settling outdoors
-
Smooth transitions between activity and rest
Practicing these skills in a familiar, relaxed setting helps dogs remain composed during daily routines and social moments.

The Zen Den
When dogs are not actively training, they rest in our Zen Den — a quiet, retreat-style sleeping environment designed to support decompression and recovery.
The Zen Den includes:
-
Individual sleeping spaces
-
Calming music
-
Low lighting
-
Pheromone support
-
A low-stimulation atmosphere
This space allows dogs to settle deeply, process training, and maintain emotional balance — an essential component of developing calm, reliable service and therapy dogs.

Moving Forward Together

Heel’n Behavior & Service Dogs is built on care, consistency, and respect for the responsibility that comes with placing dogs in service and therapeutic roles.
Our goal is not simply trained dogs — but life-changing partnerships built on calm, trust, and reliability.

While Heel’n offers advanced public training programs, these services serve a greater purpose. Training dogs for the public allows us to fund the rescue, ethical breeding, education, and placement of service and therapy dogs for individuals who may not otherwise have access.
This full-circle model supports sustainability, ethical placement, and long-term success — for dogs, handlers, and the communities they serve.
